is easily implemented and able to be used in a wide range of sessions. It is particularly useful to determine students' pre-knowledge, hook students into a lesson, review content already explored and to develop pair cohesiveness. It is a similar structure to Kagan's Rally Robin (Kagan,2009).

PairRap

 STEP BY STEP -  airPRap

(Pair Structure)

(1) Students are given a topic

(2) Give students 5 to 10 seconds to think about their thoughts on the topic.

(3) One partner begins and says a quick response

(4) The other partner responds with a quick response.

(5) The process repeats until the teacher calls time.

(6) If the teacher wishes, they can call on one partner to give an example or his/her, their partners, or both partners responses.

Hints for Effective PairRaps

Aways introduce the PairRap structure with a fun topic that has no"wrong" answers so that students understand how it works without feeling threatened.

Give a small amount of time to think before beginning the structure to allow the student who is beginning to be ready with the first response.

You should always start with content - what you want to teach - and then choose your structure. If PairRap doesn't fit your content, find another structure.

The Cooperative Teacher has a structural approach to cooperative learning and some of the structures presented are developed by the Kagan Institute and, where the structures are exclusively developed by Kagan, they have been cited as such.

The Cooperative Teacher is NOT sponsored or affiliated with Kagan in any way. Completing a Kagan Course in your area, if possible, is very highly recommended and is possibly the best way to kick start and move ahead in your Cooperative Learning journey. Click on the link to check out Kagan Australia's workshops and resources: http://www.kaganaustralia.com.au
