Timed Pair Share

(Pairs Structure)

Timed Pair Share is particularly useful to review content already explored, find pre-knowledge of students, develop students' viewpoints on a topic and to build pair cohesiveness.

Students share in pairs, usually with 30 seconds to a minute each, on a topic given.

Hints for Timed Pair Share

Make sure you discuss why the students are doing the Timed Pair Share structure.

Aways introduce the Timed Pair Share strucutre with a fun topic that has no"wrong" answers so that sutdents understand how it works without feeling threatened.

Once students know the structure, you should always choose a structure starting with content - what you want to teach. If Timed Pair Share doesn't fit your content, find another structure.

Timed Pair Share  - Simplified STEP BY STEP

(Pairs Structure)

You will need: a stopwatch or clock.

Students are given a topic to talk about or discuss.

Give students 5 to 10 seconds to think about their thoughts on the topic.

One partner begins and has 30 seconds to talk, their partner must listen and show they are focusing.

The Teacher indicates that the 30 seconds has finished and roles are then quickly reversed for a another 30 seconds.

If the teacher wishes, they can call on one partner to summarise their, their partners, or both students' responses.
